COLONIAL SECRETARIAT,

HONG KONG.

12th September, 1947.

(17)

My dear Mayle,

Thank you for your letter (54247/9/47) of 9th August,

the arrival of which more or less coincided with the arrival

in the Commissioner of Police's office of the petition to

which you refer.

The petition was originally dated 21st April, 1947, and

the date was subsequently amended to 1st August. The delay

is alleged to have been due to slow circulation around various

outlying police stations and it reached the Commissioner on

21st August.

It was forwarded on 25th to my office.

The Governor will be forwarding it under covering despatch

in the very near future, and I think it would be premature to

comment now,

except to state that as it stands the petition

appears to contain so many inaccuracies that I have asked the

petitioners to send a deputation to my Principal Assistant to

try and explain it.

I think that you should be aware of one small point;

Sub-Inspector H. Parsons, who forwarded a copy to Lt. Col.

Rees Williams, M.P., is not a signatory to the petition.

Yours sincerely,

mitch.

N. L. Mayle, Esq., Colonial Office,

LONDON.
